2016 Studio Recital, Williams Hall, New England Conservatory
For those that inquire about my teaching...
I currently serve on the trombone faculty at the New England Conservatory (faculty page). As of fall 2025, I am fortunate to work with a vibrant studio of seven students.
Alongside the excellent curriculum provided by NEC, I strive to create additional, unique opportunities for my students. In addition to weekly private lessons, we meet regularly throughout the school year for Studio Classes. These sessions allow us to explore material beyond what can be covered one-on-one—for example, performance technique, audition preparation, ensemble skills (intonation, balance, blend), mock auditions, and orchestral excerpt coaching. Each class gives students another chance to perform, apply what they’ve learned, and learn from one another.
A core element of our studio is developing creative approaches to practice, including using Digital Audio Workstations for recording and feedback. Each year, we also present a studio recital, where every student performs a 10–15 minute solo with piano accompaniment, and we close with an ensemble piece. These performances offer invaluable opportunities to build stage experience—a great “warm-up” for required senior or master’s recitals, as well as for graduate school or professional auditions. My overarching goal is to ensure every student is fully prepared for their next step, wherever their path leads.
Update (July 2025): I have upgraded my studio and online setup to offer high-quality virtual lessons through the Farplay platform. Here is the Quickstart to Farplay (Link). I reserve most Friday mornings for these sessions, which often book up weeks in advance. For more information or to schedule, please contact me at stephen.lange@necmusic.edu.
